Lisboa. Sol. Esplanadas

It’s now hard to believe, but the first terraces on Comércio Square (which most locals insist on calling by its old name, Terreiro do Paço) only opened in 2011. They first appeared on the west wing, and in the following year came those on the east wing. The sun shines on the west wing in the morning, and on the east in the afternoon. The tables are aligned, giving the impression of just one large terrace at first glance. But they are actually several, by different cafés and restaurants. They offer the choice of traditional Portuguese food, Italian, contemporary Portuguese, and international. And there’s also ice cream, beer, and snacks to enjoy looking out to the waterfront and the monumental architecture. 

Hoje custa a acreditar, mas as primeiras esplanadas na Praça do Comércio (que a maioria dos lisboetas insiste em chamar ainda pelo nome antigo, Terreiro do Paço) surgiram apenas em 2011. Começaram na ala poente e no ano seguinte chegaram as da ala nascente. O sol bate nas esplanadas da ala poente durante a manhã, e nas da ala nascente durante a tarde. Estão alinhadas, e à primeira vista parecem ser uma grande esplanada, mas estão divididas, e os cafés e restaurantes têm todos uma oferta bem diferente. Há a escolha de comida tradicional portuguesa, italiana, portuguesa contemporânea, e internacional. E ainda gelados, cerveja, e petiscos para saborear com vista para o Tejo e para a arquitetura monumental.
